North Yorkshire Youth Commission Members help film new victim-blaming language training video for North Yorkshire Police
The Youth Commission have been busy recently with a few members taking part in North Yorkshire Police’s new training video on Perception and Victim Blaming Language.
This was my third time taking part in the police’s training videos, and I feel it was another great opportunity to help bring more awareness from a young person’s perspective to our local police officers and staff.
On filming day, we highlighted alternative ways that adults within the police can explain things to young people. It is important to not use language that blames or intimidates them, and we explained the barriers this can make if they do.
The film script included themes of drug running, vulnerability, and exploitation, which are things you mostly only hear about and don’t usually come across in your everyday life.
Unfortunately, some young people do which is heartbreaking, so making this video gave me a small chance to help them.
Although the content was very serious it was exciting to film my section. I did practice at home a few times, so I felt more comfortable on the day.
We did encounter some problems before filming because I was much shorter than Angus who I was partnered with. In the end we had to go outside and sit on a bench in so that we looked a similar height!
It was great to work with other members of the Youth Commission on this and something for all of us to be proud of being asked to be a part of.
I really enjoy taking part in these videos and hope Youth Commission members can continue to contribute to them in the future.
